100mm Handheld Kaleidoscope Filter, Semicircular Special Effects Filter with 3pcs Vacuum Cleaning Cloths Nano-B Series

I have a lot of optical filters for my camera, including an on-the-lens, full kaleidoscope filter. That kind—the kind that screws onto the lens—is very convenient, but it's a little restrictive. Also, the full kaleidoscope is a "Pow!", in-your-face effect, so its range for effective pictures is limited.

This half-kaleidoscope, handheld filter misses the convenience of an on-lens filter, but you get the benefits on the other side. You can easily alter the tilt angle for slightly different effects, the handle makes it easier to hold than an on-lens filter, and the half-kaleidoscope isn't really *subtle*, but it's subtler than the full kaleidoscope, so it's easier for the picture not to be all about the kaleidoscope. On the other hand, if you want to, you can always crop to fill the frame with the effect.

I've always enjoyed the K&F Concept filters, and this one seems to be well constructed, too. There are screw threads in the handle because some handheld filters also come with a post you can screw into it, so you can hold it like opera glasses. But I haven't found that to be particularly easy or helpful, so I don't really care that the post isn't included.

100 mm is pretty big, especially since interchangeable lenses are often around 67 mm outer diameter for mirrorless/DLSR cameras. But I think that allows you to get around 2.5 extra versions of a subject without covering half the frame in their multiples. So again, I think that helps on the subtlety side.

I included samples with my iPhone SE's single camera and my Sony A74 mirrorless camera with an 85 mm lens so you can see that you shouldn't expect this to work well with a cell phone camera. But I played around with it for some dog portraits and had some fun.

A bit of advice, though, whenever you're using these weird filters. If you are photographing something that's happening once and you really need to get it right the first time, these filters are tricky, so you shouldn't use them. If you can take multiple shots, then feel free to make *some* of them attempts at artistic fun, so you have a chance at making something unusually cool. But try to remember not to overuse it, because it can quickly get gimmicky and you'll be mad at yourself in the editing room if every shot has the same effect!

It has a very interesting half diamond shape that I wasn't expecting to be a thing for this effect. Somehow it works very well.

I noticed that getting the glass to cover the area I wanted sometimes left the edge of the glass showing in the image as I couldn't get it to cover the entire lens. I could see it while I was taking the picture, but it didn't seem to show in any serious way in the final image.

It has some weight to it, so I believe it's legitimate glass with an aluminum handle.

The handle is also threaded for 1/4-20, so with a little creativity you could mount it to your rig rather than having to hold it in front of the lens by hand.

Overall a fun filter.

I'm a big fan of k&f products and this one did not disappoint. I really like this kaleidoscopic filter. The materials are good quality and it is well made like many of their other products. It is a fun filter to use when you want to be creative.. I like using these type of filters for magic effects, so I don't have to do a bunch of post work.

Compared to other filters I've used it is the most lightweight, which I LOVE. Other Kaleidoscope filters I used were really heavy, so they could be a bit cumbersome to use. This you can slip it in your bag and slip it on your finger and it's so EFFORTLESS.

This is one of those photography accessories that are just fun to play with. I don’t see me using it regularly, but sometimes I have days where I just want to “play” with my camera and that’s where this accessory comes in. It does make a cool effect. It is a K&F Concept product, so it is well made like many of their filters. It can be a little difficult to get placed correctly as it is not screwed to the lens. I ended up holding it with my left hand so my right hand would be able to tap the trigger without moving it (I was hand holding the camera, but might try a tripod next time). The filter is a good glass and I didn’t notice it causing any odd effects to the image. Five stars.

This little hand held filter is a so fun. its light, and come with a carrying case and three microfiber clothes. ITs easy to hold and adjust to get your optimum kaleidoscope effect. The carrying case is small enough to pop in your bag and take it on the go. It's well made, simple, and functional. I love it.

Gives a great trippy effect for video or photo. Fun little effect. Recommended.

This is a solid filter. It can be used to create some really awesome photos or videos. Especially videos, I can only imagine the cool effects one can manifest. The filter works well with all manners of lens, I mean it doesn’t go on the lens so you either have to set or hold it, so it’s just about that placement. It’ll work with any camera, I haven’t tried it but I wouldn’t be shocked if it worked with a phone camera as well. Again, this doesn’t go on the camera, you would have to hold it by hand or mount it in front of the camera.
This is also half, so it gives a good effect. This is ideal for those who want to do everything in camera or only lightroom, but if you are someone who uses photoshop, then why bother, you'll have more room to work with in post, and you don’t need this.
The glass is really well built, I mean solid stuff, that alone is enough to get it, and it comes with a carry pouch, a good pouch, no complaints there.
This is where the complaint starts. I don’t know what to use it for, other than taking a photo and then transferring the JPEG files on the spot. If it’s a raw file, you have to process it no matter what, I can just take a moment and transfer it to photoshop and do it there. I’ll even have better control there as well.
Though for videos, it’s a different story. I think for a video this will be a cool effect and will make post production easier. I still have not figured out the logistics if I am making a video, I will have to hold it by hand or I will need a tripod or something to hold in front of the lens, but that makes moving with it a little difficult, unless I plan on using a cage.
At the end of the day, it is a solid built filter that will come in handy every once in a while, maybe. I can’t say I like it too much but I cannot deny what this filter brings creatively, correction, will bring for certain people.
