My 14" notebook (Lenovo X1 Carbon) fits in easily and it has about 5 cm free on the side and more than 10 cm at the top, so a 16" should fit in.

YES, I would say so, since the camera compartment as a whole can only be opened from the side facing the back, you cannot see the contents of the backpack, I find that very practical. It is therefore not recognizable as a camera backpack.
