Does this camera rotate? Meaning...am I able to spin it around horizontally and have it point at a meeting verses it pointing at myself?

Yes. You can manually rotate the camera to point away from you. It could do 360 degree however the USB cable gets in the way. but 180 degrees is easily done manually.

How's the sound quality? Would this camera be good for recording events a stuff?

Honestly, the built-in mic is the biggest weak point on the camera. However, the upside of this camera vs the rest made it easy for me to ignore this. What kind of aa batteries can be used? there are rechargeable nickel-zinc that are 1.6v but hold their charge longer. if not these, what's recommended

The camea can take 1.6v rechargeable batteries, but in general rechargeable battery might drop its voltage quick depend on its physical performance. In the cold weather, recommend using Energize lithium batteries to get longer lifetime.

Can they be used for star gazing?

I had to wait for a clear night. I tried all of my binoculars. NONE were suitable for star gazing. They magnified the dark sky. On a tripod you can see a speck of light.

Is the external microphone port compatible with any external microphone or only the sjcam external microphone?

SJ7 Star supports only officially external MIC because of software limitation
