I need to mount a 52mm filter onto a 48mm threaded adapter. This set comes with 52-49 and 49-52. Looks like this will not fit. Correct?

hello the filter ring is suitable for filter installing on the lens, according we know, there is not 48mm lens or filter.
Your camera's lens thread size will be marked somewhere on the lens barrel. This number is always preceded by a "Ø" (diameter) symbol. Eg. Ø52 = 52mm thread size.
if your lens size is 48mm, the item is not suitable you

What size does the ring have to be if I want to buy another one for another lens?

The size of the adapter ring depends on the size of the filter thread of the lens used. This is noted on the lens and in the lens cap.

New to this how do I determine what nd filter will fit my lense? My Sony a6400 came with a kit lens of 18mm to 135mm.

Look at the end of the lens again. Approx opposite the lens zoom range, u’ll see a zero with a line thru it. Next to it will be a number (possible 58 or 58mm), that will be ur lens size. That should hopefully help but all my lens are not Sony so I can’t be 100% sure.
