The skinny version: These are good thermostats, great if you can use and understand modern technology and software. The app is somewhat flawed. Nicely designed and built well. They do not have a mind of their own, you just need to understand how they work. This thermostat combines programability with wireless connectivity over wifi to allow you to control the temperature in your home from almost anywhere. YOU CAN USE THIS IF YOU ONLY HAVE TWO WIRES FOR YOUR THERMOSTAT (personal experience) but they have more function if you have more wires you can connect. Check out the video at the end of the product images here on the amazon page and it will very helpfully guide you through setting it up should you need assistance although the device describes the setup process pretty well all by itself. Check to make sure that all of the wires actually have functions in your home, sometimes you might have a dead wire that just isn't connected to anything. You can also use this thermostat with multiple heating zones (personal experience). It does not require you to use a nest thermostat in each zone, they will work independently. If you have more than one for multiple zones they can work together. The thermostat is able to learn from how you use it in order to be able to predict what the temperature should be set to. This is useful as long as you have a regular schedule and regimen that you stick to as far as setting your home temperature. If you need the temperature to be different at different times on different days (maybe because you come and go from home at different times) then this thermostat is still great but you LIKELY NEED TO DISABLE THE LEARNING FEATURE. The thermostat will fight you over what temperature it is supposed to be if you let it learn because it will predict its own schedule after some days of learning. You can see this schedule and manipulate it directly from the device, but it is nicer to do from the app. This can also let you fine tune the thermostats predicted schedule if you mostly want to keep it. Turn off learning in the settings if you don't want the schedule to change any more. If you turn off learning but the device has already made it's own schedule and you don't want it to have one then you need to manually delete all of it's scheduled temperature changes one by one in the schedule. Make sure you check all of the days in the week. THE THERMOSTAT ALLOWS YOU TO SET A SAFETY TEMPERATURE. The device will not let the temperature drop below this setting even if it loses power. You can change this setting any time. It also allows you to set an eco temperature. This is the temperature the thermostat will be set to whenever it is put into eco mode. This is particularly useful because it locks the temperature at that number until eco mode is disabled. This basically lets you have a "favorite temperature" so to speak. You can also just lock the temperature otherwise. These thermostats also sense humidity which it can use to decide how to heat or cool your home. It can find out the local weather via wifi and also use this to help it heat or cool your home. You can choose to have the device wake up when you walk by and it can display the current temperature setting or the time or the weather outside. If it shows the current temperature setting then it will show the degree increments and mark where the current temperature is if you come closer to it. Otherwise you can change the temperature just by turning the outer ring on the device which is quite nice. They use pretty decent materials to make the thermostat and it does have some weight to it. THE APP IS GOOD BUT SOMEWHAT FLAWED. My experience is with the apple/iphone version. Every time you use the app it has to connect to your device, so it has to load. It will connect to the devices through your home wifi. This is the flaw in the app as it sometimes doesn't connect well to your devices and sometimes can't connect to individual devices. If this happens then don't get worried. You may not be able to use the app temporarily but you can still make changes from the device always. Give the app a little time or try again even by signing out and back in and you will be able to use it again. It's easy to sign in and out and the connecting part of the app can just be a little screwy. It doesn't do this all of the time and nothing changes unless you change it or you let it be changed. From the app you can manipulate any one of the thermostats in your home (as well as other products in the Google Nest family). You can set all of the thermostats to eco mode at once if you want to or individually. You can view the humidity at the thermostat and the outside temperature. You can adjust the devices other settings as well, including password protection (4 digit pin). You can access the scheduling data for each thermostat and make changes on a graph if desired. THE SCHEDULE WORKS BY plotting temperature points at specific times (15 minute intervals) throughout the day. When it reaches that time on that day it will change the temperature setting directly to what it is scheduled to go to. It doesn't slowly adjust over time from one point to another. Each point has to be deleted by itself if you want to clear it, you can't just clear the whole thing at this time.Why I bought the product: Obviously I wanted a cool smart thermostat and to save money and all of the jazz. I thought it would be a good idea also because of the multiple heating zones in my house (baseboard/boiler) since the thermostats will work together although they don't gain a lot from this because I only have two wires to plug into them which gives very little function. I'm also away from my house at varying times and it seemed very useful to be able to change the temperature on the fly which I would probably never do otherwise. I'm sure that these have saved me money on my bill so far but I personally don't really know how much because I just installed them soon after I moved into my home so I don't really have a point of reference.
