Touch the bottom light icon to activate the backlight.
This is a great temperature monitor for indoor and outdoor use. The main unit is on our dining table and the outside temperature/humidity sensor is mounted on our back patio. I have to admit that I didn't read the instructions and was frustrated at first because I couldn't read the screen. It was too dark. After playing around with it for a few minutes, I realized that to activate the backlight, I had to touch the small bulb label on the bottom of the device. Once I do that, everything is fine. The temperatures listed on the unit are accurate and also match my old school thermometer mounted on the patio. This device also has humidity and moon phases, which is also cool. We really like this little weather station.
