Some other reviews are whack
Great design if you only need 1 tripod for a vacation or so, for most people it will be fine. I kindly disagree that this tripod works for any mid-level pro. This tripod: HAS NO QUICK MOUNT PLATE, the plate does not fit with my other tripods either, cannot quickly rotate to portrait mode.

Wobbly mounting plate
Initial impression is well put together, but have trouble with the mounting plate not attaching firmly to the Nikon camera, thumbscrew too long (see pic, this is with the thumbscrew fully seated). Can't use it as-is, hopefully seller provides advice.Update: shimmed the screw with a couple of aluminum washers, now it's tight with the camera. But not very tight with the tripod, there is a little slack in the dovetail quickmount. The plate is supposed to be square, but it fits differently when turned 90 degrees. The quick release mounting plate is the weak spot of this tripod. It's probably standard size, so I can buy a better one elsewhere.Changed rating to 4 stars.

Invaluable Tool!
Several times I tried mounting a light stand stud to a Swiss arca quick release plate to use a tripod for a light. There isn't enough surface area to create friction to keep it in place. I have been looking for something like this for a while and finally came up in a search. I am surprised there's not more option. This is one solid piece will fit 2 common quick release mounts. I am EXTREMELY happy with this seemingly simple tool!

very convenient for hiking
A friend told me about this after using it on some national park trips out west, so I got one to use on several day hikes on vacation. It works well, as advertised. I'm only giving four stars because the base plate does not fit with my tripod ball head, so I was swapping base plates when putting the camera on the tripod or back. Not sure about why the difference in quick release plate standards, but worth looking into if it matters to you.

Vanguard Alta Pro: thoughts
Non-expensive, good quality, nice pan-head, good quick-release plate. One point of critique: the feet are difficult to clean after walking in rain, snow or sand.Quick tip: attach your BlackRapid Strap to the quick-release plate: fail-proof !

This is a fantastic head, sturdy
This is a fantastic head, sturdy, easy to use, great quality for the price. I had to deduct 1 star because I prefer the Manfrotto quick release plate (200PL RC2-System) over the Arca-Swiss plate.

I used a BlackRapid FR-T1 Fastenr to replace the original screw on the Manfrotto 200PL quick release plate, this allows me to switch between strap and tripod without the need to remove the plate.I needed an extra safety net in case of (my) human error or component failure, and this Op/tech Uni-Loop connectors worked perfectly for this purpose, strong yet reasonably compact.
