The Bible of Backyard Astronomy
Sure you can find a ton of info on the internet for free, but most of it is either (a) too basic, (b) terrible, or (c) too geeked out and detailed. Astronomy nerds love to get hyper technical. If you want to learn everything a normal person ever needs to know about the hobby in a well written, straight forward manner, this is your book. I just got back into the hobby and when I saw the BYAG had a new version out I bought it without hesitation. Excellent resource.

For enthusiasts and amateurs
Our household is very much into astronomy. We belong to the local astronomy club and all of this was brought about by my son's deep fascination with the heavenly bodies. We have many, many books on astronomy - many of them excellent - so we kind of have a high bar when it comes to astronomy books. All that said, this is an excellent book. Probably one of the best.I'm impressed with the depth of knowledge conveyed. Our solar system gets a through treatment, not just the planets but significant moons as well. There are charts, maps, diagrams and stunning photos. This will be an intellectual feast for visual learners. There are things presented in this book that I haven't seen elsewhere. The actual book itself is well made with solid binding, and I dare say it will hold up even in a classroom environment.Would definitely recommend.

Great for dad and the kids!
Bought this for my brother in law who is into astronomy and my nephews love whatever their dad is doing so everyone enjoyed it! Easy to set up and works great had it out a night with lots of stars it was a fun experience for the family!

Excellent 1st telescope for all ages!
My seven-year-old son loved learning about astronomy using this telescope. It was just the right level for him to learn.

Excellent introduction to astronomy
I was completely new to astronomy when I bought this book, and it taught me so much! The author explains things really well and in a very approachable, conversational way. As its title implies, it's geared towards someone who's teaching themselves without benefit of an instructor, and I think it does a great job of this; just wish it was published with color images. Overall, though, I highly recommend this book.

The Best Astronomy Memoir
Reminded me in a way of Carrying the Fire by Mike Collins. One reviewer noted that Collins was not merely an astronaut who happened to be a writer but was rather a writer who happened to be an astronaut. Emily Levesque is an engaging storyteller who may well be able to write about anything, but she's also a passionate and accomplished astronomer. So she's written about astronomy.

Learned a lot about astronomy and was entertained
Interesting. Good storytelling. Mix of personal and intellectual. Snapshot of where astronomy has been, where it is, and where is going, with fun stories mixed in.

super for an astronomy student
My husband teaches astronomy and the parents of one of the students wanted to know what would be a good pair to give their son for his birthday. We found these at Amazon and my husband was delighted with the quality and price. Excellent for a young astronomer and his report back is that he has spotted a good number of the objects he has been taught about and is really happy with them.
