I got mine as a gift after passing getting my Tech and General within two days of each other. My little radio tests at 5 watts for VHF and about 4 watts for UHF. I can talk through repeaters that are 50 miles away and come across very cleanly. I use it on VHF and UHF with the tri-band Nagoya antenna. Someone tried to talk me into a Diamond, but the Nagoya is just fine. I use Chirp to program it, but learned to program it by hand. Not a big deal and easier than a old Kenwood that I have. We have a second one that tests around 4.6 watts that was purchased at the same time so you don't aren't really sure until you test it with what you got. We bought the HP 8 watt dual band version, but tested it and it didn't perform as advertised. Returned it. I have programmed in the 220 band, but have yet to talk to anyone on it. Our ARES group uses VHF/UHF and the nets are on those bands too. Looking forward to making contact with someone on 220. If you don't use that band, you may not need the tri-band version, but so far mine is superstar. I also bought the larger battery for it.

I ordered this UV-5X3 radio before the Sept. 30, 2019 deadline. I am pleases with the BF-F80HP I got a while ago, but since this one has software improvements, I chose it over another HP. The size is the same, but the build is not as beefy seemingly. The BAND button is the only extra control in it. A programming cableb is not included. The speaker is a little more tinny, but still loud and clear. I ordered the Nagoia tri-band antenna which is long andflexable.I wanted it to still have all the frequency coverages, not limited by the new FCC communist agenda. I almost returned it when I read the specs in the manuel. But after testing the one I got, I found that it has much more range than even my BF-80HP! I think the included manuel is for future models. Test it before getting disappointed. The range of mine on each band is fantastic, 130 - 172.999, 222 - 225.999, 400 - 520.999. Tri band. After Sept. 30, 2019, you may find the radio sold with limited ranges. So get it now, in any brand you choose before you can't. Because like braudcast TV, they are coming for your radios and guns soon.

Nice radio, has 220 band, which is a fairly rare find. I already have other 220 radios but wanted to have another. I have the Nagoya tri band antenna and the larger battery. This makes a good combination of features, size, and balance.

Able to keep track of the grandkids when we are camping and they decide to wonder off in the woods, so far have not had to use them for a emergency with the kid, but it nice to know I be able to communicate with them.

My son and I used the FRS band to communicate between vehicles on our recent overland adventure. The radio worked flawlessly. Given the price, this is a must-have item in my opinion.
