First off, get the rid of the rubber duck and getthe Nagoya whip (na-320a), the extended battery, and the programming cable, now it looks and acts like a real radio, even inside the house. Bought the adapter to hookup to my outside antenna and I can really pickup traffic on distant repeaters and tag them as well.I first used it for my Technician class studies as a scanner and to practice using the Chirp software to download/program local reapeaters, active frequencies and other channels to listen in on. Really helped my learning curve once I got familiar with it and reached a knowledge tipping point. All those wavelengths, frequencies, bands, hf, vhf, uhf, restrictions and offsets etc. can be intimidating at first. But this radio helped, along with a few books and some youtube videos, to reinforce with hands on trial and error if you dont have buddy or Elmer to guide you. Resist the PPT button until you pass your exam and receive your call sign !!I still use it as a scanner/mobile transmitter , and to experiment with various directional antennas for portable low power work. Lot of radio for the money, and is a good first handheld radio that will be useful for many projects in your ham future.

For the price the radio is great. I have been given radio reports and people thought it was equal to a major named radio. The audio quality on the one I received is good, modulation good, I know the older models did seem a little tinny or hot , that does not seem to be the case here. I hit a repeater88 miles away from the mountain top. Good radio for the price on all three bands.

This was my first Ham Radio and basically the reason why I got my Ham License. The radio itself seems pretty sturdy but I have been told that BTECH (Baofeng) radios are not very drop resistant. However, with that aside, I really like this radio. If you pair this radio up with a good Nagoya Tri-Band antenna you can get pretty good coverage of your local area. In my case, I am able to hit repeaters that are 20 - 40 miles away. For people in urban area's, that is good enough. The battery life is also pretty good. I tested mine out by just having it listen in to channels and it had a 3 day life. Which, again, a lot more than I expected. If you are not happy with this, you can get a bigger battery that should give you a 6 day standby time. There are also a wide selection of accessories for this radio and the other Baofeng's. So if you just have to have the attached mic, you can get one.The only really big down side to this radio is that it is a super-pain to program. I mean, to the point that you should really buy the programming cable with this radio and just program it via the Chirp software. Just get used to the point that you are not going to get good at programming this radio and you'll need your computer to help you do it.Other than programing the radio, everything is pretty simple it. You can easily setup scanning and hopping over to other channels or frequencies (Programming in special configs for channels is actually a pain).

It is a true tri band transceiver. Manually programming is why it is not 5 star. The programming manually is a beast. I would recommend a goid tri band antenna. It works!

It’s a distinct improvement on the UV-5R due to addition of the 220MHz band, improved features in the firmware, and somewhat better antennas. It does not include a triband antenna, so if you don’t want to swap antennas for 220MHz plan on buying one.

Have this wonderful small UV-5x3 radio. Works great but how do you program multiple and scan/monitor these frequencies at the same time especially scanning them? Book/instructions have a lot of info but when it comes to programming it seems strange and needs to be easier to understand for stupid people like me.

With the Tri-Band Nagoya antenna I get butt kicking receive on all 3 bands. Make it 4, include FM broadcast recep too. As always battery charge life astounding.
